What is the Outdoors Club?
Outdoors Club is a web-based activity and social club for outdoor enthusiasts with thousands of active members and outings nearly every day. Our powerful, user-friendly Web site enables members to easily organize and join a diverse range of exciting outdoor excursions. Outdoors Club has no political agenda or mandatory meetings and it's free to join. And because the Club and its activities are run by regular members, activities are also generally free.
Why should I join?
We have dozens of outdoor activities every month. You can participate in an activity you are familiar with like hiking & rollerblading or try something new like river rafting, mountain biking, or rock climbing. It’s a great way to meet other outdoor-minded folks, get some fresh air, & exercise.
What kinds of activities are offered?
Hiking, rollerblading, bicycling, river rafting, skiing, kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, beach and nature walks, camping, whale watching, etc. Occasionally members coordinate activities such as helping in the construction of low-income housing as well as beach & trail clean-up projects.
How much does it cost?
Membership is free at this time. Activities are also generally free to join; however there may be cost associated to participate in the acitivity. For example, lift tickets, transportation, etc..

How do I know if an activity is right for me?
The description of the activity combined with a beginner, intermediate, or expert rating should give you a good idea of what to expect. If you have questions use the Message Board or email the activity coordinator.

How can I help my local chapter?
Tell your friends & family by calling them or using our email tool. Next, plan, organize, and coordinate an activity. Post on your favorite Internet message boards, outdoor related websites, or newsgroups and tell them about finding us and your upcoming activity. You often can get a free club & activity listing in local newspapers and periodicals. Here is a copy of our Press Release to send to them. Last you can post one of our flyers in your local outdoors store, school, or gym.
What if there are no activities in my area?
There is an ongoing thread on our Message Board about starting a chapter in your area. Many of our members are very helpful and would be happy to give you some advice. You don’t have to fill out an application form or sign any contracts to start a chapter in your area. Nearly all areas of the country have hundreds of members registered. However, most have few activities, except California which has hundreds per year. Try posting a couple activities in your area and then get the word out for more people to register on the website and attend your activities. Something as simple as a day hike can get things going. Get the word out by posting flyers in your local outdoors store, school, gym, or newsgroup postings, etc. Call or broadcast email everyone you know or anyone you think would be interested. You can also use our email tool. Last, since you would be the one that ‘got the ball rolling’ you could be the de facto Club coordinator for that area!
Should I tell others about Outdoors Club?
Yes! Tell your friends & family by calling or using our email tool. Next, post on your favorite Internet message boards, outdoor related websites, or newsgroups and tell them about finding us. You often can get a free club & activity listing in local newspapers and periodicals. Here is a copy of our Press Release to send to them. How does it work?
After registering you will begin to receive email notifications about upcoming activities in your area. Click the link within the email or go directly to our site & review the Calendar.
How can I see the calendar of activities?
On our homepage select the link that says Calendar, then the region of the country you are interested in. This will take you to the current month’s activities within your area. Click the arrow on the small monthly calendar on the left to see upcoming or previous month’s listings.
What is the message board?
It is an area to post questions and comments about upcoming or past activities. Also, share your outdoor experiences, buy and sell equipment, or ramble about anything our members might be interested in.
What is the Photo Gallery?
This is where members can share and view photos from any outdoor adventure whether a Club activity or not.
Who can coordinate activities?
Any member can. Activities are led by members that know of a cool activity, have an area of expertise, or are really good about researching and planning. They also are organized, willing to help others, and have good communication skills.
How do I plan an activity?
If you are familiar with a particular area or activity there isn’t much planning to do. (See the paragraph below about posting your activity) Also, the Web is a great resource for learning about new things to see and do. If you’re interested in checking out a new place or adventure it is likely others would like to come along.
How do I post an activity?
Go to the Calendar page. On the left under the small calendar is a button that says Post an Activity. Make the activity title clear and concise. Next chose the date, time, location, maximum number of people, and write a description of the activity. Include driving directions and other relevant information so others can make an informed decision whether to attend. Also, designate your activity as beginner, intermediate, or expert. All of this information can be changed or updated later, even after the activity has been posted. Last, choose whether to notify members via email about the activity & choose whether you would like to automatically have a Message Board thread created.
How can I communicate with members signed up for my activity?
You can use the Message Board or if the changes are last minute you can email them by clicking Send Email to Members Signed Up for this Activity on the bottom of the specific activity page. It is good to communicate with participants as the date approaches as it serves to remind people of the activity and their commitment to attend. People often forget and upon receiving the reminder will remove themselves if they are unable to make it.
What are my responsibilities as an activity coordinator?
Find out as much as reasonably possible about the activity, location, possible weather conditions, etc. Then communicate via the activity description, email, or the Message Board what members can expect and what they should bring. Take precautions about keeping people from getting lost on hikes too. Have the person(s) in front of the group wait at every trail intersection. This will keep people from taking a wrong turn and wandering off. Have other activity participants help out if necessary. Also, helping to facilitate carpools as an activity coordinator is good for our environment.
Can I edit or delete an activity once I post it?
Yes. Select the Calendar and then your specific activity. At the top of the active window select the tab Activity Details. Make the changes and then Update. Members that have signed up may be disappointed if you have to cancel but are generally understanding.
Can I remove or add members to my activity?
Yes. Select the Calendar and then your specific activity. At the top of the active window select the tab Member List. Select the Member name(s) and then you can Delete, Move onto Wait List, or Move into Activity.
Can I charge money for my activity?
Generally no. However, you can charge if you need to be reimbursed or if there are other costs involved such as permits, tickets, or equipment costs. Think of it as bringing your friends out for an activity & treat your fellow members the same way. If you have a question about what is reasonable, post it on the Message Board. One of our ‘seasoned’ members should be able to give you the guidance you need.
Should I tell others about Outdoors Club?
Yes! Tell your friends & family by calling or using our email tool. Next, post on your favorite Internet message boards, outdoor related websites, or newsgroups and tell them about finding us. You often can get a free club listing in local newspapers and periodicals. Here is a copy of our Press Release to send to them. Last you can post one of our flyers in your local outdoors store, school, or gym.
What do I get out of it?
The biggest reward is seeing the smile on other’s faces & sharing the experience with a bunch of new friends. Most people that coordinate activities get a great deal of enjoyment out of it. Consequently they keep doing it. The activity coordinators are the ‘cornerstone’ of our Club & without them we wouldn’t exist.
How can I delete my account?
If you are aboslutely sure that you want to delete your account, you can do so here. Please note that your account will be permanently deleted and irrecoverable!
